Name ….. Steph Charlesworth Why did you volunteer?…..Every official at every swim meet is a volunteer, without them giving up their time our children don’t get to experience the competitions. I began to volunteer so that our kids can continue to participate in something they enjoy, I’m there anyway so why not make myself useful! Was it scary?….Absolutely! I was thrown in the deep end at the minors league after completing the online module, but I just started off thinking it’s only pressing a button twice and you know that there’s a chief timekeeper with a spare stopwatch ready should there be a problem. The larger meets have the electronic timing too. Did you get support?……Yes there’s always a couple of very experienced timekeepers on hand to help you out. Sally and Kath have been great in making me feel part of the team and are always there to answer any questions when something new comes up. Has it helped you understand more about swimming?……I’m still learning every time I volunteer, I’m gradually understanding the rules and reasons why my children may have experienced disqualifications in the past so I can help them with their swimming a little now. Volunteering has given me a behind the scenes experience - so much planning and time goes into the meet for some of the larger roles by the volunteers, they really are a huge asset to the club! As a timekeeper I only really donate the time at the swim meets my children are already at anyway, but I’m doing my bit and helping the show go on. Although it has been nerve wracking at times, I’m gaining confidence each time I volunteer, you are getting a front row seat on the action, complete with the 4D cinema experience when some of the older boys dive in 🙈 what’s not to love?
