55 Borough of Barnsley Swimmers headed to the east coast this weekend to take part in the Scarborough Summer Splash. Securing a huge number of medals and speeding tickets. The squad secured 19 speeding tickets, 39 golds, 46 silvers and 33 bronze medals. This combined with a number of high placing positions ensure that BoBSC walked away with the prestigious top club award earning a record breaking 778.5 points beating 2nd place City of Sheffield by a clear 18.5 points. Club spokesman Adrian Wightman said “Once the BoBSC swimmers put 100% effort into the event and came home with some epic swims, medals and memories. Thanks to Scarborough for hosting such an enjoyable event.” A breakdown the full results are below. 3 swimmers from The Borough of Barnsley Swimming Club (BOBSC) were part of the 250 strong volunteering team at the Citi Para Swimming World Series that took place in Sheffield, this weekend (16-19 March).The event was a tremendous success with Great Britain and Brazil grabbing the spotlight and maximum medals in the third leg of the Citi Para Swimming World Series.
The volunteers witnessed some record breaking swims as welling meeting Para swimmer and Strictly star Ellie Simmonds. The BOBSC team consisted of Chloe Etheridge, Alyssa Warren and Lola Wooler. Chloe said “It was an amazing opportunity to volunteer on the Events team. It was an inspiration to support behind the scenes of such a prestigious international event.” Alyssa Said "It was amazing to be part of this event, watching how the different swimmers adapted in different ways to achieve fantastic swims. It was very inspiring and shows that anyone can gain achievements despite disabilities " Lola Said “As a competitive swimmer I understand the hard work that goes on with training and the commitment of all coaches and helpers, and parents. I wanted to give something in return and thought this was an excellent opportunity to do so. I was inspired, humbled and amazed by the talent I saw and this has encouraged me to keep training, and have faith in myself”. Club Spokesman Adrian Wightman said “Once again our swimmers have excelled outside of the pool. It’s no easy task volunteering and taking part in an event like this and everyone within BOBSC is very proud that Chloe, Alyssa and Lola took part and represented BOBSC on the international stage. The competition will take place at the Manchester Aquatics Centre. Manchester 2023 will be the third time the World Championships is held in Great Britain following Glasgow 2015 and London 2019. With just one DQ across the whole competition and a massive number of lifetime bests it was an excellent meet" Borough of Barnsley Swimmer Club (BOBSC) Chloe Etheridge has recently completed a Swim England Young Leaders training Course and has qualified as the youngest official in recent times at the swimming club. Chloe, who has been swimming since the age of 2 said
“Back in October 2022 Swim England North East, offered an opportunity for Young Leaders, to be part of competition officiating training, education and development opportunity. I thought it would be a great opportunity to learn a new skill and support the swimming community in other ways” Having now qualified as official Timekeeper she is taking part as an official at the upcoming Yorkshire Championships on Sunday the 5th February. She is also hoping to gain officiating experience in stroke judging and turns with a longer term view to complete further technical officiating and swim coaching. She is hoping that the success in and out of the pool will further support her GCSE PE course which she is currently completing Club Spokesman Adrian Wightman said “Chloe has showed a real desire to give back to the swimming community. To undertake the course and take time out of her busy life is a real sacrifice and a great testament to her character. We hope that she takes her officiating to the highest level. Borough of Barnsley Swimming Club, BOBSC, took part on the Alec James Memorial gala at Scunthorpe earlier in January. A team of 11 swimmers took part in this annual gala, brining together clubs aligned to the Barnsley Minors League.
Medals were secured by Daniel Riley – Gold 50m Backstroke Obra Filip – Bronze 50m Backstroke Autumn Davis – Bronze 50m Butterfly Lola Wooler – Bronze 50m Backstroke, Breaststroke & Freestyle Sam Guettat – Silver 50m Breaststroke, Bronze 50m Backstroke Rebekah Jones – Bronze 50m Butterfly Kiera Tiggardine – Bronze 50m butterfly Swimmer Rebekah Jones reported “I was shocked to win a bronze medal in 50 fly knowing how hard it has been to improve this stroke. It has always been difficult to swim fly but over many months with the support and advice from coach Julie Rice and lots of hard work ,sometimes quite painful , I have been able to place 3rd and set a new personal best.” Club spokesman Adrian Wightman said “Yet again the BoBSC swimmers have put 100% effort into a gala with some awesome swims resulting in multiple lifetime best times and a good number of top 6 finishes as well as haul of medals” Other swimmers who took part were Abigail Riley, Millie Herbert, Francesca Cresswell, Joshua Nortcliffe, Alex Tiggardine, Ashton Wooller, Faith Benson, Alice O’Keefe, Mia Howarth, Evie Blessed, Elena Standeven, and Lily O’Brien. Olivia Byrne celebrated a 9 medal haul, Charlotte Greaves and Freddie Cook-South took 7, Louis Ennis totalled 6, Alexander Matze 5, with Dimosthenis Magoulas, Esme Hays, Harry Austin and Ruby Severn all securing 3, Alyssa Warren, Joshua Guy and Sophie Greaves claiming 2 and 1 medal to Adam Gill, Alex Tiggardine, Bethan Thomas, Emilie Todd, Jared Almond, Keaton Hall, Lily O’Brien, Purdy Roberts, Sam Guettat and Samuel Wathen. Medals were brought home courtesy of Freddie Cook-South (11) Georgia Lee (17) who won a gold medal and silver in their respective 50m events. Club Spokesperson Adrian Wightman said “One again the Barnsley swimmers, the underdogs, went to the regionals with a can do attitude. This again has been displayed by the multiple top 10 finishes, personal bests and the medals we secured. The club send huge congratulations to our regional champion Freddie who smashed his life best time by over 2 seconds to secure gold. Georgia gave a life best swim and in a tense final was pipped to second place by only 0.07 seconds.” The team comprising of Oscar Lugton, Lily Knowles Millie Herbert, Lucas Morton, Louie Ennis, Oliver Austin, Freddie Cooke – South, Harry Austin, Harry Tupman, Poppy Pearson, Dimosthenis Magoulas Georgia Lee, Roman Wallace, Cody Ingram, Millie Northrop and Myles Tupman secured multiple top 10 finishes through the weekend. The wider squad continues to train with expectations high for the upcoming Spenborough Bonfire Bash being held next weekend as well as our own Christmas Sprint Gala on the 10th December 32 Borough of Barnsley swimmers have competed at the prestigious Yorkshire Swim Association's 2022 Winter Meets throughout October. Achieving a record number of personal best times the squad secured 4 Yorkshire Champions through Alexander Matze aged 10 (50m Breaststroke) and Harry Tupman aged 12 (50m Freestyle, 50m Butterfly and 50m Breaststroke)
Alexander narrowly missed gold but won silver in the 50m Breaststroke. Bronze medals were also won by Louie Ennis 14 in the 50m freestyle and Harry Tupman in the 100m freestyle.
